About Us

Welcome to our school and thank you for visiting our website! Ponsbourne St. Mary's is a Church of England Voluntary Controlled school, which was founded in 1847. We have a caring ethos and high expectations for children's learning.

Our mission is to provide a planned, exciting and relevant learning environment in which all participants are welcomed and valued, as part of a Christian ethos. At the heart of our vision is our link Bible verse (Matthew 5:14-16) with all children encouraged to 'Let your light shine'.

Our four classes are taught in mixed ages (Nursery & Reception, Years 1&2, Years 3&4, Years 5&6) with capacity for up to 115 children across the school in total.

The original buildings remain with remarkably few alterations, except for the addition of our eco classroom.

There are strong links with the church since we are a Voluntary Controlled School. Reverend Theresa, who is in charge of the local five parishes and is a regular visitor to the school takes weekly collective worship in the church on a Monday morning.

Staff and children attend church every Monday morning. We hold special services to mark Harvest, Remembrance, Christmas, Mothering Sunday, Easter and our Year 6 Leavers. We welcome families with backgrounds from all faiths and none. Our worship is invitational and inclusive for all.

There is a unique family atmosphere at the school and we enjoy strong links with the local community. Parents and carers are encouraged to become fully involved in their children's education to support the school by volunteering in a variety of ways. These include reading and accompanying children on school visits and a host of other areas.

The school benefits from the proximity of Cuffley Camp and Tolmers Camp but additionally, organises more distant residential trips for Years 5 and 6 to PGL centres and for Years 3 and 4 to Hudnall Park.

We work with an Ofsted registered provider for wrapround care. Premier Education organise our breakfast and after school club provision.

We are committed to safeguarding children and follow all procedures set out in Keeping Children Safe in Education.
